WHAT IS STEM?

WHAT IS STEM? STEM is a commonly used acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. There is a growing concern that the United States is not preparing a sufficient number of students, teachers, and practitioners in these areas. Many organizations, including the partners that created STEMposium, are thinking of new ways to highlight the importance of STEM and bring innovative ways of engaging kids into the classroom.

WHAT IS STEMPOSIUM?

STEMposium is the collaboration students, teachers and other educational innovators in STEM education who are sharing their innovations in how to teach, learn and engage STEM in the classroom through 60 second videos. Innovators are invited to upload their videos through this site from now until January 2012. The most compelling videos will be selected through several rounds of reviews, starting in February and ending in March. Selected presenters will be invited to speak at the STEMposium Event in April 2012 in San Francisco. These videos will be identified within one of five tracks: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Integrated STEM.

2011 STEMposium

The inaugural STEMposium event was marked by a celebration at the California Academy of Sciences on April 1, 2011. The STEMposium process was launched on October 28, 2010 with a morning event with a call to action for 60 second videos highlighting innovations in STEM education.

With over 130 videos submitted, a panel of judges selected the top 12 presenters from this group to present at the STEMposium event on April 1. This event was live-streamed and offered a polling system and chat room to share these extraordinary innovations with the rest of the nation.
